A worn shaft affects valve timing, valve lift consistency, rocker arm stability, and oiling efficiency long before it fully fails — installing a new shaft during a rebuild puts the valve train back on a smooth, correctly machined surface.

Common Wear Indicators — Check During Teardown
- Scoring and groove wear where the rocker arms ride
- Flat spots or uneven wear on the contact areas

- Oil starvation marks — dry patches or rough texture
